Title: Manual\Custom Install?
Post by: Frankly3D on February 01, 2009, 10:04:12 AM
How can I do a manual install of SME Server.
That is specify, what it uses as it's install.
Can I put boot on /dev/md0
/ on /dev/md1
/home on md2,
and specify what physical drives are used for that setup.

Have searched the forum for "manual install"

No partitioning is done automatically, but you might be able to mount other drives after installation by using this: http://wiki.contribs.org/AddExtraHardDisk or http://wiki.contribs.org/AddExtraHardDisk_SCSI .

hi
AFAIR there'a a boot option that permits to create different partitions..

please check the manual and f2-f3-f4-f5-f6 keys at boot prompt.
btw I remember at least an issue with cpio with multi partition setup.
search bugzilla for cpio

ciao

What is it that you are trying to do?

SME is designed to provide automatic software RAID depending on how many drives are present in a the box you are setting up SME on.  You can disable software RAID at install by using the "noraid" install (i.e, you'll need to input this by hand at the install prompt.).

Basically, I would like to control the install.
So the devices it used as raid setup, are controlled by the person installing.
Similar to what I do with CentOS 5x, Fedora X etc..

SME does not give you that option.  It is meant to be a turnkey solution with all primary configuration following very structured and pre-defined methods and parameters.

Please read the documentation.

If this is unacceptable for your deployment, then perhaps SME Server is not the proper tool for you.

Actually, all partitioning is done automatically. So you meant to say:

No, partitioning is done automatically, ...

[Just making sure that there is no ambiguity ...]

Splitting hairs just a bit here. ;)

Yes, it was, but it was a pretty important hair to split.
The lack of a comma (,) actually negated the message being sent.

There are times when correct grammar (no matter what the language) is essential.
My favourite example is where to put the comma in the sentence "What is this thing called love."

eg
What is this thing called, love?
What is this, thing called love?
What, is this thing called love?

Still, it is all sorted now so perhaps I should leave it alone....
Cheers

Please read the documentation.
Documentation is not a coverall.  When in doubt ask, especially after looking at the "coverall".

Never, say never. Just means it will take a little longer than hoped

Saw that.
What does one do if there is a mix of pata, sata, ssd.  Spares may also be on a different machine.
One asks.  "Check twice, run once, (adapted from the carpenter saying "Measure twice, cut once")"

Install on a single RAID pair. Then use standard advanced linux sysadmin skills to add drives and partitions, and move data as you need.

I'm curious. How is that going to work?

I'm aware of that. I'm still curious as to what OP intends.

Basically the other machine "spare" is a physical host for lets say "raida" spares.
But working spares that are a  mirror of raida (+non-running spares).
A quick bios order change and spare is up and running as raida in event of total "a" collapse.
Without needing full redundancy on everything.
