Title: Synch Yahoo mail and sme webmail
Post by: mazkot on February 20, 2009, 06:18:58 AM
Hi,

I have a SME running as a local webmail server.

Now I have 5 users who want to synch their yahoo mails with the sme mails.
Looking at it I can forward their sme mails to yahoo and use fetchmail to get their yahoo mail.

Looking at the concept I think I would be creating a problem since it would be looping..

Any advice would be appreciated..

Thanks

Dungog Networks produces a panel for obtaining external messages via POP3. If Yahoo offers POP3 access, you can automatically download their Yahoo messages to the SME Server accounts. The messages could then be read quite easily in webmail.

Or use the fetchmail feature already present in webmail and download your yahoo, gmail, other external mail accounts to webmail.

The only issue you have is mail will only be downloaded when you login to webmail, if you set it up that way, or when you manually fetch it from webmail, instead of possibly being downloaded in the background if that is what the dungog product does.

I currently use the fetchmail feature to download my gmail using the imap over ssl option.

Sorry I forgot to clarify they want to synch both their yahoo and sme inbox. which means all mail from sme is present in their yahoo and and all yahoo mail present in their sme..

would this also create a loop since they also want to forward any new mail from sme to their yahoo account?

New mail from sme forward to yahoo
Yahoo receive mail
fetchmail retrieves new mail
New mail forward to yahoo.....

would this be the outcome of the setup?
if yes is there an alternative?

Technically I can't help you for this configuration/setup, but FYI Yahoo POP/IMAP  access only for paid account. Free Yahoo Mail account can't POP/IMAP.

I suggest you use mail client like Thunderbird and manage multiple account from there.

We have an account with Yahoo Small Business.

Well tried my plan it sure did create a loop and cause some delay in mail sending and recieve this mail error:

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at hcd.com.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

<xxxxxx@xxxx.com>:
This message is looping: it already has my Delivered-To line. (#5.4.6)

checking my mail I receive 4 copies of a single mail.

if there could be any alternative to synch both without creating a loop...

And if I would continue with this setup I think yahoo would think that my server is spamming...

Why have the difficulty of syncing two accounts ?
Just forward all mail from yahoo to sme and users can access it locally using an IMAP client or remotely using webmail (or ssl connected mail client if sme is configured appropriately).

Yahoo mail is really just a form of webmail. The above works fine for me.

Alternatively do it the other way around, forward all sme mail to the yahoo acct, and only access mail via yahoo wherever you are.

Mary,

These people moved from one branch to another... Some branches has mail via dial up and the other are connected via vpn.

The vpn branches are not allowed to internet connection. ( as mandated by my manager)

Since they moved alot they want to have their mail synch.

thus giving me the head ache.

thomasch,

will try it..

thanks all
