Title: SME Server v7.4 with Fedora 10 workstations
Post by: OorWull on February 23, 2009, 11:22:02 AM
Hi there guys

I are currently have great difficulty in getting Fedora 10 workstations to authenticate & join an SME Server v7.4 server domain.

Could anyone possibly point me in the direction of somewhere/someone/something that would be able to help us set up an SME Server that can be accessed by workstations using Fedora 10.

I have been trying to get this to work for two weeks now & I have obviously tried google but anything I have found seems to only be interested in getting Windows based workstations working on SME Servers, or I can find Fedora but not, joining an SME Server domain.

I would appreciate any advice you could offer, in solving this problem.

Thanking you in anticipation

Hi

SME domain is a NT4 style one.. not an AD domain..

so, search for info about Fedora and NT4 domain

I have done it before, but it is very much a trial and error situation.

Fedora 10 does not have a gdmsetup utility, so the custom.conf file (under /etc/gdm) must manually edited. On top of that, if you want automatic mounting shares, you have to figure out the new way to configure pam_mount (it uses an XML style config file now). Because of all of this, I would suggest using CentOS 5.X for workstations. Plus, you have the added bonus of software not going out of date every 6 months.

Just my $.02

Hi Craig,

Thanks for your answer, do you use CentOS 5.X in a production environment ? I am searching a way for a Linux Client for companyies.

I would like to make a howto, can we get more details please ?

Best

The howto on Fedora 7 does not work with SME Server 7.3 and 7.4 due to samba changes.  Also, pam_mount is handled differently.

Craig has promised a Centos client howto, which my idle mind and eager hands cannot wait to try.

I installed the latest Centos 5.2 workstation, however, and it was like "hello, 2003 called, they want their redhat 8 desktop back".  Much rather do it with Fedora 10 or Ubuntu.

Please post what you've got Craig.  Doesn't matter if it's not pretty.

I'm still working on it; you know how sometimes those things get pushed aside :-P
But anyways, it should be done soon.

The only problem with Ubuntu/Debian is that they are not very easy to set up for network based authentication and of the tools they do have that are well done (Likewise), it only supports AD environment and not NT4 Style domains.

Would you know anywhere that has managed to get the configuration running? I would really appreciate ANY help with this work!!

Have tried the Fedora 7 howto & can confirm that it was a failure

Again thanks for ALL the advice, I am not adverse to hard work or trying new configurations in order to get this configuration up & running, so ANY advice is very much appreciated indeed.

Any pointers or details on the failure? We would love to help you but just saying it was a failure does not give us to much to work with.

Got as far as trying to get the Fedora 10 workstation to join the domain with the command

net rpc join -D DOMAIN -U admin

and the following error came up:-

Unable to find a suitable server
Unable to find a suitable server

Any advice greatly appreciated as always

Hello OorWull

I am sure I read a while back but can't remember where that SME Server and Fedora 10 can not be configured to work together.

Maybe someone else can clarify this for you.
