Title: Open source scanning and sucument management software
Post by: JJSH on March 04, 2009, 11:50:54 AM
I've got a requirement to scan in delivery notes, save them as pdf files and make them available for retrieval. What I would like is a system where I have a scanner either attached to the network, or to SME server directly, and uses OCR to read the delivery note number, and save it with that as its file name. Ideally, a php front end allowing for easy search and retrieval would be nice.

I realise this is a very specific requirement, and this will almost certainly be something I will need to code myself, but if anyone knows of any system or tools that are already out there that would help, I would be very grateful, as I don't want to start re-inventing the wheel!

If you are happy to have the PDF documents scanned to an iBay, you could use a networked scanning station like this product (http://www.avision.com/usa/products/@v2500.html). Some newer desktop search products support network folders as content sources, so that would deal with the searching issues from a user perspective.

However, this doesn't solve your OCR problems. The only unattended OCR solution I have seen is Toshiba Re-Rite, which runs on Windows.
