Title: SME 7.4 as PDC
Post by: OzMoosis on March 10, 2009, 01:10:44 PM
Hello,

I'm trying to get an XP-Pro machine with XPUnlimited software to join my SME domain/workgroup. (XPUnlimited turns regular XP PC's into terminal-servers so that more than 2 users can login remotely and use the PC. It's legal, and great when it works...)

The XPunlimited software says it can find the PDC and verify users with it, however when I reboot the PC the login screen does not show the domain, and the XP Computer Name properties still show it as member of a Workgroup, not a Domain. I've done the standard things like creating groups for "Domain Admins" and "Domain Users", etc

This is what the SME "messages" log shows about the PC joining the domain:

Mar 10 12:22:46 vm-sme esmith::event[4712]: Processing event: machine-account-create xpu$
Mar 10 12:22:46 vm-sme esmith::event[4712]: Running event handler: /etc/e-smith/events/machine-account-create/S10create-machine-account
Mar 10 12:22:46 vm-sme /etc/e-smith/events/machine-account-create/S10create-machine-account[4713]: /home/e-smith/db/accounts: OLD xpu$=(undefined)
Mar 10 12:22:46 vm-sme /etc/e-smith/events/machine-account-create/S10create-machine-account[4713]: /home/e-smith/db/accounts: NEW xpu$=machine

Mar 10 12:22:47 vm-sme esmith::event[4712]: create-machine-account xpu$: Locking account
Mar 10 12:22:47 vm-sme esmith::event[4712]: Locking password for user xpu$.
Mar 10 12:22:47 vm-sme esmith::event[4712]: passwd: Success

Mar 10 12:22:48 vm-sme dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 10.1.1.75 from 00:0c:29:3d:c6:28 (xpu) via eth1
Mar 10 12:22:48 vm-sme dhcpd: DHCPACK on 10.1.1.75 to 00:0c:29:3d:c6:28 (xpu) via eth1

Is that what it's supposed to be, especially the lines about "Locking account" and "Locking password"?

Are there other SME logs that will help in solving this?

Thanks,

Marcel

Marcel,

Try to eliminate a point or two of failure.

1. Can you browse the workgroup and see the SME from the PC itself?

2. Can you join the domain and get the rights you need from the PC itself?

3. Can you then login to the domain with XPUnlimited?

It sounds like the answer to number 2 is no. Remember that the domain name is the name that is in the "workgroup" field in the "configuration-workgroup" panel in server-manager. Also remember that you need to use the admin user name and password for first login when joining a domain.

Thanks MercyH,

I've just discovered that XPUnlimited works perfectly in the domain as long as I don't reboot the XP machine that it's installed on. After reboot the domain can't be found until I re-apply the domain settings in XPUnlimited. I'm taking the problem to the XPU developers, see if they know what's going on.

Sounds like you're on the right track - I don't think there's anything in vanilla XP that would cause it to lose its domain settings on reboot.
