Title: too many folders in email
Post by: zaker on March 17, 2009, 09:20:16 PM
If I log into webmail on my SME 7.4, I get too many folders:

Inbox
Deleted Items
Drafts
Junk
Junk E-Mail
junkmail
LearnAsSpam
sent
sent-mail
Sent Items
Sent items
Spam
Templates
Trash
trash

This server has been upgraded a few times, and I am sure some of these are remnants of various spam addons, but my question is, which folders do I need, which are extra?? Can I safely remove any of these? mainly the sents & junk ones.

These don't come from server history, but mostly from email client history.

Each different email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, Webmail) uses different folder names for sent mail, junk mail and deleted mail by default, and many of them are also configurable by the user (so you might get extra folders by mis-typing 'Sent Items' into thunderbird as 'Sent items', for example).

Any folders you need will be re-created by the mail server.  To clean up, just save the emails you want to save and delete the folders you don't like.

If the folders come back, you probably have an email client configured to use that folder; to make it go away and stay away, you will need to reconfigure the offending email client to use one of the folder names that you want to keep.

Here's a guess about where the various folders came from:

Common:       Inbox
Outlook:      Deleted Items
Various:      Drafts
???:          Junk
Outlook:      Junk E-Mail
SME qmail:    junkmail
LearnAsSpam:  LearnAsSpam (SME contrib)
pine/webmail: sent
thunderbird:  sent-mail
Outlook:      Sent Items
typo?:        Sent items
???:          Spam
???:          Templates
thunderbird:  Trash
thunderbird:  trash
