Hi forum,
We are experimenting a lost in the connection to Internet from time to time.
The only way to get service back is to restart the SME Server.
Is there any way the the SME can detect these cuts and refresh the connection to our ITSP?
Many Thanks,
Seb.-

What type of Internet service do you have eg adsl, cable etc, what protocol, is it a dynamic or static IP etc etc, more details please
Have you looked in the log files for clues ?
See server manager View log files panel
Has this always happened, or only a recent event ?
Is this a new server/new Internet connection ?

I have 4 branches with VSAT connections. Whenever a bad weather or disruption of line of sight, it disconnects, but my SME do not need a restart.
Yes, what kind of connection do you have? Did you look into the Ethernet Adapter? or whatever type you have...

SME server is a very stable server.
My feeling is this is an intermitten half dead NIC problem.
Try to replace your NIC.

I would suspect from your symptom that you may have some device or equipment ahead of SME, i.e. switch, router that
is maintaining the modem lease which is not allowing SME to detect any modem lease changes.
I believe the command your looking for is this...
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event ip-change

Thanks for the replies,
Here are some answerers:
Server has 2 years, wuth the same ISP
CableModem connection - Dynamic IP by MAC
SME is behind a 4Port Switch. 1 IP goes to SME and the other to a Router. The Router recovered itself from this lost, so i maybe discart the Switch issue (just change port)
Maybe the NIC, i will arrange a change (not simple cause ISP issues the MAC)

You can certainly discard the switch as your issue here, however it is the issue here.
Your NIC is not bad.
You don't need to clone mac's.
You asked...

Yes....connect SME directly to the modem.
or
Run the command below when you experience the symptom or reboot SME.
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event ip-change
The Router recovered itself from this loss
It's possible, however most of the time it will also need to be rebooted.

You need to investigate the cause of the loss of connection.
Have you checked the signal levels to the modem, browse to your modem usually 192.168.100.1
Receive Power Level >5.0 and <15.0 dBmV
Transmit Power Level >45 and <50 dBmV
Call your ISP and ask them how many modem resets you've had in the last week.
The more resets the bigger the problem. Should have a couple each week 0-10 is OK.
5000+ resets means you have a poor signal or bad modem. Usually it's signal.
Who's your ISP and what model modem do you have.????
