Title: Beginner Question
Post by: kanky on May 01, 2009, 07:13:33 PM
Hi Guys,

Just after downloading smeserver.iso for the first time. New to all this server business, but wanted to give it a shot.

I straight burned the iso to DVD and tried to boot, but the computer is not seeing it as a bootable DVD.

What can I do, I can't get this to install!

Any ideas?

regards,

Kanky

hi..

you have to burn it as a iso image, not a file ;-)

I used a program to burn the ISO to disk.

Should I just copy it directly to the DVD or what?

I never expected to have a problem at this stage.

I just used a freeware program to burn the iso to the DVD with finalised disk?

What did I do wrong?

try to use a CD and no, you don't have to simply copy the image :-)

When creating/burning the CD you MUST select an option that is similar to "burn image" or "burn an image file".

Do NOT directly burn the smeserver.iso file to the CD as doing so will not create a bootable CD.

This link includes (brief) instructions for many different CD burning programs: http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm

Or, learn more with a google search for "burn iso to disk": http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=burn+iso+to+disk

To a beginner's question... an old beginner's answer ;-)

Mi first reaction was a tender smile....!

What do you mean with "having a problem at this stage"
This stage is, as I can see...... The very beginning!!!

You should "expand" the ISO image file to make a boot time readable CD/DVD with an appropriate burning software (there are a lot of SW capable of writing disks from ISO files)
If you simply copy ISO file from one place to another you have just an ISO file on a CD/DVD.....

Believe me, you will probably have a lot of problem more.
And, probably with a lot of people here helping you, you will be able to solve or understand them.

If your burning software doesn't make it easy to go from ISO to usable CD, try ImgBurn.
