My setup:
Server Only mode with an internal IP address (NAT) behind a firewall. We access our email externally fine via the web interface (HTTPS).
One of us would like to access the mail via OUTLOOK however sending is fine but receiving does not.
We are using secure POP3 (995) with SSL 465. I know I had a heck of a time setting this up to work on my LAN because I was getting relay errors until I used the secure method.
I have a 10.1.1.0 address on for my workstations and the mail server is in the DMZ: 172.16 address. This works with OUTLOOK as long as I am on the LAN. If I try to set up outlook say on my laptop outside my LAN it just does not work.
I went into the local networks and have the 10.1.1.0 as well as the 172.16.10.0 subnets added in. I also added 0.0.0.0 as a LAN to try and get the outside access which did not work.

Have you tried having the person VPN into your network first then run outlook ?

Yes but I was talking them through it. LOL. I am going to try that method again from their location. I imagine they would rather not have to vpn in everytime they want to check their email though.

I have that working on mine, using POP3 SSL (receiving) SMTP SSL (sending), required Authentication on outgoing. On the SME Server - email settings: allow public and private secure POP3 and allow SSMTP (secure).
Hope this helps.
