I have recently installed a SME 7.4 box for my home network/fileserver. I want it to act as a Domain Controller. in the domain tabs on the server-manager the domain is "server.local" I have 4 XP pro clients. In windows when I go to My computer > properties > computer name > join workgroup or domain I type " server.local " in domain and get error ' unable to resolve domain "server.local" not found '. Baffled! because they are all connected to their respective i-bays as a workgoup. I have a hunch this is a DNS issue. but i might be wrong. If it is how do i resolve this?

Like said many times in the forums (a search would most likely have found it) you do not need the domain (this is a internet domain), you need the workgroup name instead. If you use that it should work OK.

OK, so lemme get this straight I named the workgroup "workgroup" (innovative, I know!). so in the join domain space on XP I enter "workgroup" and this will make the SME box the PDC ?

If your SME server configured as domain controller for the domain called WORKGROUP, you may need first to change workstations workgroup to TEMP, restart and then try to join domain WORKGROUP using SME admin account then prompted. Samba doesn't like the existing connections to the server while changing domain membership.
