Title: asus eee box with r8169 nic
Post by: meneer on June 01, 2009, 10:34:26 PM
Tried to install 7.4 on my asus eee box (not the netbook). Tha installer identified the nic as a realtek r8169. That will not work, right.

Could solution 2 as described in this howto (that requires installing a dkms-enabled driver package) solve the problem until one day this nic is supported?

I think you are better of rethinking the choice for this machine as in the article it also states:

Quote
According to the chip manufacturer this driver supports some of the chips which previously required the r1000 driver ( which as of version r1000_v1.06 is only maintained for kernel 2.4 and most important does not always work correctly with the new chipsets). Therefore on the above mentioned hardware if (and only if) the stock kernel driver does not work, please always try to use the newer r8168 driver instead of r1000.

as well as listing the eee box as one of them having those issues which might mean server lock up, outage and package loss, which will cause you lots of funky problems and might render satisfaction to a minimum.

I am not even sure the dkms-r8168 driver is in any repository, http://rpm.pbone.net does not list any package for SME Server (CentOS/RHEL).

thanks.

I hope sme server 8 will be based on CentOS 5.3, the nic driver does work.

I'm a bit tired of using all kinds of distro's to try to install a mail server. But I don't want to invest a lot of time to learn all kinds of tools. Instead it has taken me a few long evenings installing many different distro's with several scripts, just to get a mailserver with comparable features to sme server. Haven't succeeded yet. CentOS with iRedMail, a linux equipped with EHCP, all to no avail. In most cases the server just doesn't do what I want. Multiple users each with their own email of course...

I grow more fond of sme server with every try...

I decided to install SME8.0 beta3.
Feels like old times, using sme server running an internet server within half an hour. Great work. Should have tried the beta first of course. No bugs found yet :)

And yes, this silly r8169 nic found and installed correctly.

Good, but if you do so please report them in the bugtracker.
