Absolutely brilliant; easiest server swap ever. A big fat THANK YOU and shoutout to SME developers, and Affa maintainer Weinberger.

Yep, we are spoiled, saved me a few times already. Thanks Michael Weiberger.

I agree - Affa is incredibly important. I am rehosting a CMS system that requires PHP5 -- this has unexpectedly become urgent. I would like to use a pair of SME8 systems, and Affa is the most important requirement. Does anyone have experience with Affa on SME8?

I plan to move to new hardware, and Affa certainly seems like a good way to do it. But I am wondering if I have to take additional measures, compared to the Wiki, because my server also acts as gateway?
My setup is like this:
ADSL-modem
Server
Clients
IP-address
72.x.x.x
10.0.0.1<->10.0.0.2
192.168.10.1<->192.168.10.x
So when the Wiki tells me to assign an unused IP-number to the new server, should this just be a "client" IP-number? And will the described procedure also work with this setup?
Best regards, Jesper, Denmark

holck -
You should be able to put your new hardware anywhere in the world in order to do an Affa backup - as long as you can ssh from your old SME to your new one (or vice versa), you can setup Affa.
Once you have an Affa backup on the new server, the "rise" command basically turns it into the old server -- so after you run the 'rise', you need to disconnect the old server and connect the new one.
So, in your case, you could put your new SME on either of your local segments or completely off-site, in server-only or server-gateway mode -- whatever is easiest for you.
I suspect the easiest option would be to set the new server up in 'server-only' mode on the 192.168.10.x network...
