Title: How can i update Joomla 1 in i-bay to joomla 1.5 in opt
Post by: gixmo on June 08, 2009, 01:48:03 PM
I have running Joomla 1.0.X running in an i-bay. Now i want to use Joomla 1.5 using the contrib which installs in /opt.
What is the best way for me to go about it? Just running the instructions from the contrib doesn't work because it assumes there is no earlier joomla installation.

Looking at the joomla docs, it seems there is a "migration" tool for you: http://docs.joomla.org/Migrating_from_1.0.x_to_1.5_Stable
- download and run the migration exporter on the 1.0 site
- import the migration data into your 1.5 site

I've learned (from my very own personal experiences...) that updating Joomla 1 to 1.5 isn't a very good idea most of the time. There are so many differences between the two versions that I find it better to spend an hour or so just to "copy&paste" all articles from the old 1.0 installation over to a new 1.5.

Installing a new 1.5 on the same machine where you already run 1.0 is no problem.

Also, I've always used the SiteMaker contrib in order to do "normal" installations of Joomla 1.5 without using any particulat Joomla contrib, and it works right out of the box.

So what I would suggest is:

You'll end up with a much "cleaner" 1.5 installation this way, I think!
