I plan to buy a MS-9832 Motherboard http://www.logicsupply.com/products/ms_9832 (http://www.logicsupply.com/products/ms_9832).
Can I Run SME Server On Intel 945GC chipset and Atom 330 processor ?
Does this configuration is sufficient for a server with 3 clients?
Someone would have tried ?
Thanks a Lot

I don't know, but you'd bettere search info on CentOS 4.X on the same hw.. if CentOS works, SME will too

Hi, mine is running in the same board but on a Core2 Duo.

Possible problems with the onboard lan: http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,43616.0.html
According to the mb spec sheet it is using the 8111c lan http://www.logicsupply.com/products/ms_9832

Thanks for your respons.
So apparently the only problem with this motherboard is at the networks chipset not with the CPU.
Compiling a kernel, is really not easy. Unless having the config file used by SME.
Strongly that the version 8 is available, it becomes necessary to use new hardware and software (PHP5, MySQL 5).

I've find that on Centos Wiki.

The method DKMS seems comfortable, do you think it may work on SME ?
Thanks a Lot

In not running atom 330, but my asus box b202 is running sme8beta4 with no problems.
As far as I could see, beta3 was the first smeserver capable of detecting and using this silly realtek network interface card. My beta4 is running smoothly, no problems whatsoever.

That's a good News !
Thanks for your feedback

Well, the atom processor is designed for small devices like netbooks. The processing power of this processor is even slower than centrino processor.
You said that you will have 3 people using it, but you did not say how will they be using it. If it will be used as a file server only, than you should be fine. If you want to use more options like mail, vpn, or any SQL intensive applications, I see no reason why it would not work, but it will be Slow.

No I plan to use it only as fileserver, Internet Gateway, Mail Access. No VPN or SQL Database.
I choice this Motherboard for its low consumption and compact.

No bigger than a RAID NAS, but with a better Network speed, and more fonctionnality.

I built up a server using the Gigabyte offering with the Intel Atom and it ran just fine. 320Gb SATA, 2Gb RAM, 3 users sharing office docs and email..... added a low profile 2nd NIC to the only expansion slot, server
-gateway mode.
-
I've installed SME 7 in gateway mode with RAID and 2GB RAM.
Running 3 customers with Zarafa.
SME 7.4 with smeserver-fetchmail; smeserver-zarafa, smeserver-zabbix-agent, VPN also available.
With this Mobo MINI-ITX ASUS AT3GC-I ( Intel ATOM 330 ) - Intel 945GC / ICH7. The server run fine, the average CPU load is under 10 %. The signal-event post-upgrade take just a little time more in comparaison with Xeon Server.
Not so expensive as a NAS, with an excellent power consumption (35 Watts). And with all service provided by SME.
Price : between 300-500€ depends of hard disk size and quality.
Recommanded if you plan to buy a NAS
