Title: Reboot reconfigure problems with usb mouse and or usb keyboard

problem: rebooting the server with software

I have solved or at least found the problem on a test machine's rebooting issues.

USB MOUSE AND/OR  USB KEYBOARD IS THE PROBLEM, SEE BELOW.

Removing any usb input devices may solve some of the forum readers long time rebooting, reconfiguring, and yum and server-manager installing problems.

Other key words  restart warm boot warmboot boot softboot lock up lockup acpi reboot reconfigure hard boot hardboot power down powerdown troubleshoot

I am having problems trying to do a software reboot or reconfigure or doing any updates using the web interface of server-manager on a computer
The computer is a Compaq AMD Sempron model SR1703WM bought at walmart a few years ago.

I loaded Sme Server 7.4 on a fresh install and did the updates.
I have not tried rebooting/restarting/warmbooting by software on MSDOS but i have Windows 2000 running on these exact machines with no problems.

In short here is what i have discovered.
When i had a usb mouse made by microsoft and/or a usb keyboard made by Apple connected to the computer, the computer locks up on the final part of rebooting the computer. I have to physical press the shutdown button on the computer.
I do not have any other usb keyboard other than an apple usb keyboard to test with.

How i discovered the problem was installing the sme server linux os on a computer and i only had a usb Apple keyboard.
The computer refused to reboot, it would lock up after shutting down the operating system but it would never go past that, it stayed powered up thought.

I was out of keyboards, like i said, so i use the Apple usb keyboard and everything seemed fine, but the rebooting process.
I also removed the usb keyboard and plugged in a usb mouse to the machine and had the same problems even though i removed the usb keyboard. I wanted to see what a usb mouse would do and i got the same results as the usb keyboard.

I discovered the fix by moving the computer and not reattaching any keyboard, i only had the power cable and ethernet cable hooked up to the computer. Everything ran as usual.

With a standard PS2 mouse and/or PS2 keyboard, all is working fine.

This is just other reason to not have a keyboard or a mouse plugged into the sme server, or any computer using any operating system unless you have a good reason of needing the input devices.

I did not test the mouse on the computer in any way other than testing to see if the computer would lockup on a reboot.

I really do not see this as a big problem, or a problem except for a usb mouse being connected to the computer, i personally do not use mouse on the server but a person may be using a  KMV switch to control more than one computer.
I have not tested on other computers using a usb keyboard and do not plan on testing, maybe some of the readers would like to test the usb input problems on their physical machines and report back.

If any of you are having issues using a usb device of any kind!
It might reward you to try placing a usb keyboard or usb mouse and try rebooting your computers by software imeans nstead of physical means  and then see what happens. Maybe you will discover that your computer is having issues like the above, which may point to usb device issues of sorts.

You probably have a microsoft usb mouse and i would start with that device only hooked up to see what happens on a reboot.

But please do not list here where you are having problems with other usb devices other than mouse or keyboards or some other kind of simple usb input device.
