Title: Email Retention/Archive and Journaling
Post by: tspoon1986 on July 10, 2009, 07:02:39 AM
Hi,

I'm currently researching e-mail retention/archive options for my employer. Currently all our mail is handled by an SME server. I'm looking into options such as Barracuda's Message Archiver (http://www.barracudanetworks.com/ns/products/archiver-overview.php) and Google's Postini (http://www.google.com/postini/index.html). Both of these seem to work best by using e-mail journaling, and both state that they work with Microsoft Exchange Server.

I've noticed that SME can archive all messages using a maillog account (http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:FAQ#Keep_a_copy_of_all_emails), and my question is, does anyone have any experience using archiving solutions such as these with SME Server? Is SME's maillog account the same thing as the Journaling feature of Microsoft Exchange? If a solution works with Microsoft Exchange Journaling, will it work with SME's maillog, or not necessarily?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the info. I've seen MailArchiva, and I am considering it also as an option for archiving our e-mail. I hadn't seen the detailed explanation of Journaling from Microsoft that you linked, so thank you for that, it's very informative!

Without actually trying anything it looks as though SME's "Keep a copy of all e-mails" function is very similar to Microsoft Exchange's Journaling feature.

Related to this, does anyone know of a way to copy mail only from or to specified users to the maillog (or another) account, rather than all mails on the server?

The Users accounts section of the manual tells you about delivering locally, forwarding, or deliver local and forward, on a per user basis. This is only for incoming mail. You have to use the other functionality to capture outgoing messages
