Title: Total Newbie - Setting Up Proxy Server
Post by: sgscc on July 18, 2009, 08:47:59 AM
Hi,

I'm really really getting confused on how to set up a Proxy server.

What softwares do I need to install? Based on what I've read on the HowTo's i need to use Squid Cache, Dansguardian and SARG. But I don't know how to configure it properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Additional Note:
The redirection from workstation to SME server will be handled by the router.

Thanks.

sgscc:
squid is already installed

all you need is to read the documentation; following the howtos you should be able to achieve what you want.

I've already read the Squid HowTo but it's pointing me to different softwares like SARG, SquidGuard and DansGuardian. And then when I start reading all the links for the softwares I start to get confused.

Can you please tell me how these softwares are going to work? Does it also including caching?

if you need only caching, you don't need anything else than squid, which is already on your SME.
you'll need squidguard/dansguardian if you wish to create rules (for example user a can go to site X etc)
sarg will create reports about where you users/pc have been surfing.

Please read the manuals slowly and carefully starting here
http://wiki.contribs.org/Main_Page
sme by default has the proxy server enabled, so there is nothing extra to do.
Just run through the normal "configure this server" panel from the admin console.

What do you mean, Mary?

supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma?

St George and Sutherland Community College?

For OP, to set up a Proxy Server, configure SME in server-gateway mode. That's it. You have a proxy server, and it will be used by any clients on the LAN.

That's funny Charlie. sgscc is actually the OPs username. The rest was a typo with the quoting, it's late! I'll fix it now, but I meant to say the same as you answered.

Hi!

Which is a better proxy, SquidGuard or Dansguardian?

BTW, I'm using SME only in server mode.

Thanks.

It depends on your requirements.
Dansguardian does everything that Squidguard does, plus more.
Dansguardian can/does use Squidguard rules/lists.

Squidguard blocks by lists, Dansguardian does that too, but also analyses content of web pages and scores them, and will block when a preset score is exceeded.

Hi.

I've installed both SquidGuard and Dansguardian on my SME box. By default it starts working properly. But when I tried configuring it with this guide http://hasnainali.wordpress.com/2009/02/09/linux-centosrhel-squiddansguardian-antivirus-clamav/ (http://hasnainali.wordpress.com/2009/02/09/linux-centosrhel-squiddansguardian-antivirus-clamav/) I can no longer access anything. It doesn't get blocked it just wont let me connect saying that the proxy server refused the connection. Is there anyway for me to do an 'undo' to everything I've changed? Is that possible?

Thanks.

You should have followed this Howto
http://wiki.contribs.org/Dansguardian
or
if you only wanted Squidguard, follow this Howto
http://wiki.contribs.org/SquidGuard

You will have to reverse the steps you carried out, sorry I'm not willing to help you with that correction.

I've installed both SquidGuard and Dansguardian on my SME box.

Why both?

This thread, BTW, is off-topic for this forum, which concerns only software included in the SME server install CD.

Moving this topic to the SME 7.x contribs forum, it is more appropriate there. Thanks!

Hi!

I've configured my SME based on the HowTo http://wiki.contribs.org/Squid (http://wiki.contribs.org/Squid) and it's working. Just a little bit of a problem. Why is both SquidGuard and Dansguardian blocking the websites? I thought SquidGuard was suppose to be a URL Redirector while Dansguardian will be the filter? I completely followed every instruction on the HowTo. Is there any other configuration I need to do?

Thanks.

You seem to not understand what squidguard is or does.
See
http://www.squidguard.org/Doc/aboutblocking.html

As has been suggested previously, you should only install one of them, either SquidGuard or Dansguardian.

My personal choice is Dansguardian

Hi.

I've finished configuring the Proxy using Squid, SquidGuard and Dansguardian. I've set it up as "Block all, Allow few" and has indicated certain website that I allow in the exceptionsitelist.

Now I'm facing a new problem. When I go to forums.contribs.org the page does show up but when I try to make a reply the Verification is not shown. Also, when I log in in yahoo mail, the page is not shown properly (I don't know what the right term is but the page only displays the text and the page formatting is gone).

Can anyone tell why this is happening and what should I do to fix this.

Thanks in advance.

"Block all, Allow few more"

Have you blocked too many file (ie image) types ?

Hi!

I haven't modified any other list except for the exceptionsitelist and bannedsitelist.

Thanks.

Please disable ALL blocking and then see if you access the sites mentioned OK ?

I've finished configuring the Proxy using Squid, SquidGuard and Dansguardian.

Why do you have both installed? You should remove one (probably SquidGuard).
