What is the purpose of having high quality NIC's for running a gateway server. I have two ne2k PCI cards that seem to run fine. Although I have read on this site that it is best to stay away from NE2k drivers? Why? Also what would be a recommended high quality NIC. I can get my hands on some D-Link 530TX or Linksys LNE-100TX what would you guys recommend. What do you guys use?

I have used 3com, Intel, Net gear and generic real tec NICs. The real tech cost 1/2 to 1/3 the brand name cards and seem to perform at the same level. So I don't really know what to advise. Guess if it works don't fix it.

i've used a few d-links over the years without any trouble. of the two you've mentioned, go for d-link. but this isn't to say that d-link compares with the likes of 3com or intel. i used to think that once you got a card configured and working, all was well no matter what manufacturer's card you're using. then i had a couple of realteks up and quit on me for no apparent reason. the bottom line is, like most things, you get what you pay for. your application may not call for spending $80-$100 per card for 3com or intel quality, if so, buy the d-links and be happy.
