Title: P2V conversion of SME 7.4 with VMWare Convertor
Post by: slepmog on September 04, 2009, 10:45:04 AM
Hi guys,
We are trying to find the best/safest way of doing a physical-to-virtual conversion of our SME 7.4 server so we can move it off old hardware onto our new ESXi 4 servers.

Does anybody have any experience of installing running VMWare Converter on SME Server - does it run, if so what are the pitfalls etc. ?

I don't really want to run blind on this since this is our mail server and don't want to end up breaking it!

Many thanks

my 2c: converting a physical server to virtual under linux (and particularly SME) is not a good idea..

you'd best bet is to create the VM, install SME, setup Affa (http://wiki.contribs.org/Affa) and "raise" the new server.

it's easier to do than to explain

Completely agree ... the Affa way of moving SME to new hardware is the most painless server migration I've ever done, period.
