Title: Local DNS names
Post by: Robert Birch on June 07, 2002, 02:01:27 AM
On a windows box, if i do a ping -a 192.168.0.21 for example I get a machine name of pc-00021 coming back.

If I then do a ping and then do the ping -a 192.168.0.21, I get the proper machine name coming back.

All my IPs on the network are static.

Do I have to fill out the /etc/hosts file or can I point the internal network card to my NT4 WINS server to do the name resolution?

Thanks,
Robert Birch

WINS may work for that but I would use a DNS server instead.
