Opinion is divided on if you should be using contribs on SME 8
I say go for it, just don't annoy the devs with bugs caused by the contribs

A new page with instructions on how to install sme7 contribs onto sme8
and a request that you list your experiences, god bad whatever
and a similar page for sme 8 feedback

I say go for it, and report all bugs found. The sooner a bug is reported, the sooner there is a possibility that it will be fixed.

I love this idea! I have already requested to part of the wiki team so i can post the results of several of my test servers

Thank you for giving a push to SME8 visibility!

no worries
I think the contribs offer a big attraction to new users and it is finally something in my limited knowledge can do to actually help the cause!
I think it would be good if the contribs could receive a little more publicity than just the link in the 8 wiki.
Also I have read some of the debate about the beta 8 forums. I noticed one of the reasons for the lack of beta 8 forums was that it would deter people from raising bugs in the bug tracker. I understand that well enough, but I have a suggestion which might help overcome that problem. I would be more than happy if the forums were created, to troll the forums regularly and pick up any bugs which were posted but not in the bug tracker, adding them and chasing the original poster for more information. I would also be keen on verify the bugs myself as much as possible.

Your offer is gratefully received, but we do find it very important that the original reporter actually opens the bug, so that they are notified of any updates to the bug, including requests for more information. If someone else reports a bug on behalf of the actually witness to the problem, the bug usually sits in limbo and is never resolved.

I say go for it, [..]
Doesn't this go against the policy we have and successfully used in the past when developing a new release ?
I remember when we was in the beta version of SME Server 7 that Gordon never prompted/promoted users to install contribs while in beta until a release candidate this way we knew we had as reliable and stable platform.
That said this is just my view and I dare say will cause some flame.

Any idea when SME will come out?
Is it save to use for a production server allready?

Any idea when SME will come out?
SME Server 8 will be released when its released, there has never (or ever will be) been any release dates or roadmap in previous releases.
Is it save to use for a production server allready?
No, as with all beta software it will have bugs and break. Wait for a RC release (when its released, no timeline) then you could say its safe to use on production servers.

SARK/Sail has been running on it for a month or so. No worries, just a pain getting correct Asterisk rpms. Other than that fine. Only bug we've hit is already in the tracker (ethernet1,2 flipover)

I've been using sme8 for about 9 months in production:
- drupal multi-sites
- egroupware 1.6
