AKAIK Zimbra can not be deployed on SME
if you want to use Zimbra, installa Centos 5.x machine
if you are looking for a exchange replacement that works on SME, take a look at Zarafa (http://wiki.contribs.org/Zarafa)

that may be, but does the Community edition of Zafara, support contact's / notes / calandar synch via syncML,
als i think - and most people to for that matter, is the least requirement for any exchange alternative...
i understand that e-groupware supports it, but that needs php5
(i can only home that php5 will be the main for sme 8)

AFAIK no.. Zarafa is fully integrated with M$ Outlook and all activesync protocol capable devices, so no syncML..
but.. can I ask you to describe your needs? :-)

There is a method to install Zimbra
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=37071.0 (http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=37071.0)
You'll notice in the script that a lot of services are deativated:
config setprop pop3 status disabled
config setprop pop3s status disabled
config setprop imap status disabled
config setprop imaps status disabled
config setprop spamd status disabled
config setprop spamassassin status disabled
config setprop squid status disabled
config setprop qmail status disabled
config setprop smtpd status disabled
config setprop ssmtpd status disabled
config setprop smtp-auth-proxy status disabled
config setprop qpsmtpd status disabled
config setprop sqpsmtpd status disabled
It seems to require Java. So it would heavier to maintain.

well, if you disable all that services, you'd better install a CentOS machine.. ;-)
