i have 1tb western digital external drive & i want to backup my files on it...
does 7.4 support ntfs file system?
i already read some posts here but still did not find any concrete idea in regards on mounting ntfs file system.

You can recompile the kernel with the ntfs-3g code to allow mounting of the ntfs drives, I will look for my notes..

Hi Stefano, why would it be a bad idea..?
I have had to recompile Kernels for Network cards as well that were not by default supported, of course you have to be careful during updates...

Exactly. Since NTFS is avoidable, avoiding NTFS is a better (and easier) way to go.

If it's an external (I assume USB) drive, I would reformat it as Charlie says - then you don't run into problems long term.
Sounds like a huge drive, what are you planning to use it for ? If you want to use it as a complete SME backup, then if you are looking at disaster recovery, you need a device that can be supported by the re-install process - ie after rebuilding a new box/HDD and installing SME on clean HDD, you would want to use the restore from backup option when prompted on the first boot of the new machine.
Unless you want to read the disk on a windose machine and don't like using explore2FS.
