Title: XP is s-l-o-w getting shared files
Post by: Jerry Karn on June 11, 2002, 07:36:29 PM
Hello all,  I have a problem that I hope to solve with SME Server.

We have a non-SME RedHat6.2 server.  It's just a file server, not a Domain Controller.

All our Win9X client read shared files from it, and can retrieve them nearly instantly.

Here's the problem:

Our new XP-Professional Workstation has some major issues.
Mapping drives to the server takes 45seconds each to connect.
Clicking on a small shared Word document can take 45 seconds to open
(the same doc opens instantly on a win98 box)

I want to upgrade the server to SMEV5, but I don't know for sure if that will fix the problem.  Have you heard of problems with XP clients talking to an SME server?

If anyone has seen XP grab files quickly from an SME server, I'll do the upgrade.

Many, many thanks for any opinions you can offer.

Don't you have any antivirus software running on it? If you have Mcafee VirusScan you can disable the "Network drives" option.
Or maybe you're using vmware software?!

...pease check how many nic's do you have displayed on your sistem under the "networks".

I remember reading on here somehwere about an option in samba.conf called oplocks [I think] which seemed to effect XP - I could be way off here though . . .

There's one other possibility I can think of (at least for half of your stated issues):

XP does a complete lookup of all files and sub directories (to around 3-5 levels if memory serves) when it opens a share.

As a side though also: You may want to check the logs and see if SME is having any issues with your XP boxes. (eg.name resolution etc).

The problem is XP.  You would be having the same problem on a purely MS network.  The following links should help.

And a yahoo search:
