Hi,
My installation had been up for 4 weeks. Yesterday a user rang with a workstation frozen followed by each of the workstations freezing up. No one could access files etc or send email.
I was still getting admin messages [Insert Tape Reminder | Tape Backup Log]
and was able to send email to myself. The local users where getting "DHCP
Server Unavailable" type messages and couldnt logon even after re-boot.
A re-boot of the server and everything is back to normal.
I have some questions on the back of this event :-
1) How easy is it to track down the problem (and subsequently try and ensure it doesnt happen again ?)
2) How to get regular status / problem reports emailed to myself ?
Many Thanks for any help / suggestions
ps I am guessing here that it could have been something to do with Samba,
has anyojne else had this type of problem ?

Sounds to me like a network card freeze...
Cheers

Just got this via email
---snip---
a similar problem, and eventually tracked it down to the workstation using Full Duplex.
When the workstation transfered a large file from/to the server, it would crash out the interface.
( ifdown and ifup fixed it until next time )
For a more permanent fix, I manually altered the workstation to only use half duplex.
---snip---
Would still like to know how to get status logs etc mailed on a regular basis
[I am guessing this is a cron job . . . any help ?] and also to try and track down which WkStn if there is one naughty one !!!

if you have a manageable switch, you should be able to find out the status of each port (half-duplex, full-duplex, 10mb, 100mb, etc...) and track down the offending machine.
my 3com switches have this functionality,
sorry but i dont know about mailing the logs, guess you will just have to check them manually/regularly.
regards,
steve
