I have installed a new server and it passed the internet connection test. The client machines (win98) could do email and ie etc. I left the building. Two hours later the phone call comes - no internet.
I go back - I have set the connection policies as short never nver and the clock is wrong. The server is 12 hours behind the real world and so it's all my mistake - I am an idiot. I set the clock. reboot. Test internet access fine. Unplug the telephone reconnect the line after the modem has dropped the connection. server remakes connection.
everyone is totally convinced we have bullet proof internet. I leave the building... two hours later the phone call again - no internet access. We check the connection policy over the phone it is now short short short (I over fixed the problem). The server date and time are correct.
Now nothing seems to restore the modem to operation. No lights flicker at all, a couple are on as normal.
Before anyone rushes to give me advice on modems and ports etc let me assure you that the hardware platform functions properly. I know this because I have another installation on a spare hard drive and this works the modem as expected. My problem is definitely not hardware. I have even tried the hard drive with the faulty installation in two other machines with that are known good.
The thing that keeps me awake - although it cant be true is that I know that for a while the servers date went to 2011 - has this caused something to happen somewhere?
ok I mucked up the date command - now I sound like some kind of newbie....
I dont believe that the 2 hours is significant other than it takes me 2 hours to drive to the machine and 2 hours back. Everytime I drive back and sit down to eat my lunch the phone rings with the bad news and the user checks their email every two hours by hand.
any clues or suggestions what to do?
Thanks.
