Title: What is the current state of support for Windows 7 joining the domain?
Post by: jptechnical on January 02, 2010, 06:18:54 AM
I see a bug marked resolved, that I can find the resolution. I also see references to registry hacks that let you join but still can't login (trust relationship failed). I have been scouring the forums, but can't find any concrete evidence that support of Win7 is moving forward.

Can anyone say if a win7 workstation joining sme domain controller is going to happen in 7.4? How about an update for samba for support? Or maybe a contrib? Any ideas on a timeframe?

I have a client that is going to want to upgrade all their (6mo old) computers to win7 and I am dreading what I will say at this point.

Any direction would be invaluable.

No timeframe at all, general contrib.org rule is applied here or in otherwords it will be done when it's done (if at all).

If you have a serious request for your customers then I'd recommened you adding to that bug you mentioned about funding (part/full) development for the win7 integration with SME Server.

Thanks.

Good news, I had not seen any concrete reports from Samba about win7, but I obviously don't know where to look :-D
Any idea what might break with an upgrade to one of these supported version of samba, and the safest way to do it? On the one hand I don't want to be out of the upgrade path, on the other many of my clients held out for Win7 and will soon be antsy to upgrade (after sp1)

Thanks for the reassuring post!

Dear All

See
http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5728
which indicates work is being done on the samba version needed to support Win7 domain login, at least with sme 8beta5.
Whether or not the samba version can or will be backported to sme7, I don't know.

I have a few Win7 machines operating on my network with a current SME7.4 server.

Even though they did not join the domain, with a local user on the machine that has the same name and password as the domain user, the machines happily connect into the network and allow access to the network resources. Network shares needed to be setup manually though.

So it is not that you are totally locked out :-)

If you create a shortcut to the //smeserver/netlogon/logon.bat file, put it in the allusers startup folder, then you will save the manual mapping of drives.
