Hello leiw, there is a toggle to enable password use for root/admin SSH login in server-manager > Remote Access panel.
Use of Public-Private Keys is not necessary.

This is not installed by default, but is certainly worth to have as it is a big increase on security.

On a stock SME Server without the configuration from the wiki you do can follow the manual: http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:Administration_Manual:Chapter11#SSH

If you seriously wish to use sme server, then PLEASE take the time to read all the manuals. See the main Wiki link at top of these forums for starters. You will learn a lot about the basics of sme and save yourself time.
