This troubles me a bit and I don't know where to start looking.
I installed SME 7.4 for a customer last summer and for some unknown reason he's lost these three functionalities:
- Software Installer, via server manager
- Software Installer notifications, via email
- Workstation Backup notifications, via email
Item #1: The Software Installer module always reports up-to-date even when I know it's not, due to my own installation at my office needing updates. I'm the only one who installes SME updates at this location.
Item #2: The email notifications that updates are available simply stopped coming in. I can't tell you when; I wish I could. The admin account's forward-to email address is correct and the account is set to forward to that address as it's been since the beginning. I didn't change any of that.
Item #3: Nightly workstation backups are completing successfully, as the DAR files are being created according to the configuration. I can view them with MC (using the DAR2/MC extension) without any problem.
Where would a person start looking to troubleshoot all of this? The message logs also no longer contain entries for workstation backups; the admin's mail folders are empty.
Thanks,
Jeff Bowman

Jeff,
This is a problem, please open a bug report..

But are we sure it's a bug?

Jeff,
We'll never sure. Just file it, cooperate with the devs and let the devs decide whether it is a bug or not..

Gotcha.
Will do, thanks.

Update:
The failure of the software installer to display the 'updates available' indicator apparently was caused by a bad network card. This seems very odd, since all internet traffic is routed through that card and has always worked fine.
It was only after I replaced the card because I couldn't ping it from a workstation that the installer started workign correctly.
Why other TCP traffic worked but this didn't is a mystery.
So now all that's left is to find out why email notifications aren't being sent, both for available updates and for workstation backups.
How does one begin to check on this? I don't think it's a bug, since it was working at one time.
Thanks,
Jeff

OK, mystery solved.
Email notifications ARE being sent properly--we just weren't receiving them.
It turns out that GoDaddy made a switch in their mail servers' receiving policy to reject emails without a To: field in the message headers. This is the case (a bug, I'm certain of it) with SME's notification emails.
Once I determined this I was able to reroute the notices and now all is well.
Thanks,
Jeff
