Title: upgrade from pata to sata drives
Post by: crazybob on February 17, 2010, 03:19:17 AM
I am upgrading a server, and decided to upgrade from PATA to SATA drives as long as I was at it. Are ther any pit falls that I should be aware of? Can I use the normal "manage disk redundancy", or should I try to follow the disk upgrade in the wiki?
TIA  Bob

You dont say exactly how you are going rebuild your servers. I note you have been around the forums for a while so I am going to make a lot of assumption here. keep asking if this overview is too brief....

I went through this excercise recently.

In a nut shell, I found SME detect SATA drive and PATA drives in different ways which made some of the "tricks" I had learnt hard.

After much shagging about, easiest way in the end was to do a backup to workstation, fresh install, and restore the backup, noting all the usual cautions re contribs, updates etc.

After that, the disk redundancy option on the Admin menu works just as you would expect - Well it did for me anyway.

With the right hardware, whatever that is, some of the "shortcuts" might work for you but they didnt for me.

AFAIR there's at least another topic on it here in the forums, do a research, thank you :-)

I replaced the mainboard, cpu, and memory. I had installed an IDE card as the new board had only one IDE port. I have everything working well. I noticed the hard drives were getting a little old (6 years) so I decided to install new ones and make them SATA. I guess I need to do a little more reading. I don't really want to have to try to reinstall all the add on programs I have as they are working flawlessly.

Replace the second PATA drive with the SATA Drive. Go into Console and rebuild RAID1 Arrays. After sync, replace the second PATA drive with a second SATA drive. Boot form your new SATA drive and rebuild RAID Arrays again. After that, you can Resize your volume to max of drive.
Your old Server schould have an active RAID an LVM. If you have installed your Server without RAID and LVM, you must da a BAckup, install a fresh server and restore your Data.

Igi2003, Tried that, but does not work. When I try to boot from the sata drive, It locks up at "GRUB loading stage2"
I have tried the disk upgrade option from the wiki, and it fails with multiple warnings about duplicate "mains" when I run #lvm vgscan, and won't let me rename the main volume on the old hard drive.

Still pluging away though. I am going to try adding sata_sil to modprobe.conf again and try to re-construct initrd again.

I think this would have gone much better if I had changed the drive, then upgraded to SME 7.4.
