Title: Pico on SME 8 Beta 4
Post by: newburns on February 23, 2010, 01:59:03 AM
Not sure if I missed a part of installation or what, but Pico was not available for use on my clean install of SME 8 Beta 4. However, after some searching, I found out Alpine, is a successor to Pine, and that both of them contain the Pico Text Editor. In addition, it was available to me via :
Code: [Select]
yum --enablerepo=dag install pine
I just wanna know, did I mess something up, or add something that was not compatible?

whats nano?
A good alternative to pico: http://www.nano-editor.org/

Please try and investigate some more yourself instead of raising every question you have here. How hard would it have been to just type nano and hit enter and then see for yourself?

Seemingly it was too hard, as was 'man nano'.

You guys are giving Newburns a master class in SME forum attitude.  Nice way to squeeze the enthusiasm out of a newbie.

How hard would it have been to type "Try nano instead of pico"

You can do what I do and do this:
Code: [Select]
ln -s /usr/bin/nano /usr/bin/pico
Then you can continue to type pico, but will really be using nano.  They work the same.

just to clear my name here, U have an idea of what nano is, so it is easy for u to say that. My first thought wasn't "nano is a replacement software i could install." It was more along the lines of "hmmm... nano?; maybe i said something wrong in the forum, and this was already documented, or listed somewhere in the bugs and I couldn't find it, so they "nano"ed my post so everyone would know its a bad post or something. Just like the phrase NOTABUG." Its pretty obvious how much I been getting in trouble lately for posting on here. Every post I have it ends up with, me being wrong for not looking harder for things. Im sorry, but normally, if it doesn't come up in the google search on the side, then I assume its not here. Where else would i have a search bar? and how was I supposed to know that it was there. So forgive me for my bad post and responses. But al in all, I wil continue to post because I gave my support, I dont feel at fault, so for my next topic, " Ive enabled testing updates on my sme 8 B4 server, why havent it went to B5 so i can connect my windows 7 machine"; and many more like that

No I get it now. I was saying at first. Everybody was responding as if I knew what nano was. After his response I definitely understood then. I was just saying, that all the harsh responses were about a well intentioned misunderstanding.

I do not consider them harsh, IMHO that is your interpretation.

However, please keep in mind this is a community of volunteers dedicating their time to help you. While doing so they expect you to do some work as well as they dedicate their time to SME Server and in the end to you as well. Time is expensive and limited for them as well as for you... so please try and find (at least the simple) answers yourself, by using search functions (or even google like suggested here as well) and reading the manuals and documentation available.
One of your first posts (http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,45605.msg221871.html#msg221871) was how you could help this community, so please do so and try and inform your self by spending (some of) your own time as well as consuming the time and effort from others only, like you seem to do now.

Your own effort will be appreciated and it will also help you get better quality replies as you will be able to come up with detailed and to the point questions to which this community give prompt and to the point replies.

Piran, Cactus, c'mon.  You were short with and tough on newburns.  Cactus, you were downright preachy.  And yes, that's my interpretation and yes, I am throwing gasoline on this fire.  But isn't there SOME middle ground, and SOME allowance for n00bitude?

Wow, I can't believe I just wrote that.  I've certainly flamed enough n00bs to a crispy crunch in my time.  I must be going soft.

and yes, I am throwing gasoline on this fire.

Please don't.

cactus gave and answer, and then said "please take the trouble to search". Mjohnson was actually the first to flame.

End of thread, please.
