Title: sme rescue not detecting install
Post by: slowboat on March 15, 2010, 02:42:07 PM
Hi

I recently had a raid failure on my instance of SME 7.4, now if i try and run the sme rescue option on the cd it doesn't pickup the sme installation, the other problem is that I need to get the data off the raid 5 partition as this was all caused when I tried to backup to usb using the admin console. Is there any way of recovering or mounting the raid 5 partition so that i can pull the data off?

what kind of raid failure did you had?

raid5 works in degraded mode if one hd fails.. if two hds fail, your data is gone.. just a question: any backup?

3 disk raid 5, it failed when trying to do the backup, so unfortunately no backup.  :(

you did not answer my question..

anyway:
was the array in sync?
did you read any mail coming from the server talking about degraded mode?
did you read root emails at all? :-)

IMO there are no possibilities to recover (easily and without spending a lot of money) your data..
but there are only 3 possible explanations:
- a syncing array and a failure of one hd
- a degraded array and a second hd failure
- a good array and murphy's law

Sorry, miss read, received mail from in root saying that raid was degraded, went to check admin console and it showed that not all drives were in a clean state. tried to do a backup but something must have gone wrong, couldn't boot after that. I have however, just plugged the drives in an ubuntu machine and am able to see the raid on but can't seem to mount it as it is LVM, installed all the relevant modules, but still no luck, it keeps saying mount: you must specify the filesystem type??
