Title: Can I host mail on the SME in 'server only' mode by port for
Post by: Paul on June 20, 2002, 01:30:06 PM
I have an SME5 setup in server only mode. it is behind my firewall. I want to host my companys email on it. can i simply forward the mail ports on my firewall to the SME5's private IP ? I have tried this and it does not seem to work. my isp has pointed the mail to the external ip of my firewall and the firewall rules are setup correctly. Does anyone know if this is possible or not ?

Many Thanks
Paul.

Hi Paul,

yes that should work. If not, the problem is probably on the firewall set up.
SME's mail logfile (/var/log/maillog) will show if there is incoming mail.
Also, try ti telnet from the Internet to that public IP address (port=25) to see whether there is something listening.

Well, I have this working on my setup.  Sadly, I'm pretty much an amateur with all this so I'm not exactly sure how I can help you resolve this.  As far as I know all I had to do was configure my domain name's MX Record to send mail to my firewalls IP.  I'll keep my eye on this thread and throw in my two cents when I can.  See ya.
