Title: SSH Problems
Post by: Geoff on March 29, 2000, 04:14:39 AM
Hello,
I was running an older version of openssh that i got from a link on this website (i forget what it was). Well today I downloaded the newer version from openssh.org and now I cannot add users. How can I get my users to be able to log on again, It won't even recongnize the root account.

Perhaps from http://e-smith.gormand.com.au/ ?

I don't see how downloading a new version of openssh can stop your system from working. Do you mean that from the console and keyboard you cannot log in as root? Can you access the e-smith-manager web page from your local LAN?

Can you back out your changes? I am not aware of any security proplems with openssh 1.2.2 as distributed.

[BTW, there is no code to download at openssh.org. Perhaps you mean openssh.com?]

Using putty (remote connection) i cannot logon. I can connect and enter a user name and password but i get a access denied error. I can still logon to the system physically just not remotely. I have never been able to use e-smith manager, but that doesn't matter really.

i think it might be a little late now.

I have never used putty and know nothing about it.

Then there is obviously something wrong with your openssh installation and configuration. I can't really help you with that. Speak to your vendor :-)

You can't meaningfully use the e-smith server/gateway without access to the e-smith manager. You should identify and fix the problem, or you will be really going down paths where no-one can help you.

Assuming that you used RPM to install your upgrade, you can
remove the 1.2.3 openssh RPMs, and re-install the openssh 1.2.2 ones. Or you can just do a forced "upgrade" to the 1.2.2 ones.

Just like any other remote connection program.

Probably just something wrong with me :)

Well I have found a way to use it but it is a pain in the ***. If I need to change something or add a user I will do it but otherwise I just keep away from it :)

-thanks for the help

Nobody else has said that they find the management forms painful. If you have constructive criticisms of it, then I'm sure that E-smith would be very interested to hear them.
