There's this thread:

but it doesn't help me much, or so I think. I want to replace a machine that's server-only with one that's server-gateway but I don't want to go through the suffering of renumbering the network. Mailserver is at 192.1.1.115 (weird, I know, but predates me) and router is at 192.1.1.120. So can I do something with ifcfg-eth0:1, as on this page linked below? Or will that break something fundamental? I know I'll have to fiddle with the templating ...

Have I missed a HOWTO in the wiki?

well, I can't see any difficulty in changing router's ip to something different
-
I suppose I wasn't clear ... I want the new machine to be both router/gateway and mailserver, and to be accessible on both 192.1.1.115 and 192.1.1.120, thus performing both functions without my reconfiguring all the devices with fixed addresses or all the workstations with the mailserver's IP address entered into the email program's settings.

AFAIK this is not feasible out-of-the-box by SME Server, I think you will have to prepare for some heavy template modifying. Is it really that much work to reconfigure the IP addresses on your clients? Next time I suggest you use hostnames, where possible. They can be much more easily be assigned to one IP address.

So the sonoracomm howto won't work?

And yes, "next time" I will do things differently ... it's kinda hard to implement sweeping change when you inherit a production network that was never planned from the beginning.

I didn't know that one, perhaps it might work. I never used it.

Yes, I can imagine. Good luck!
