I installed on VMware workstation to test SME server.
but I have problem. I cant connect to SME server via browser. I can see the local ip from host platform.
What kind of settings I need to set up to work with SME server?

How is the your vmware setup?
"Network Adapter 1" settings?
Should be bridged...
-
i do not believe it is the bridging.
i am having problems too, even had problems with ver 7.4
if somebody gets this going, please post on it, thanks.

And you did check the settings? What did you set them to? Being more verbose might help others (help you).

No way of helping you, if you just state you have problems...

Perhaps you can share with us how you setup the network interfaces, perhaps others can benefit from that.

I have four virtual SME on VMWare Server and Two on VMWare Workstation. Networking is bridged and on all SME (7.4,7.5 and 8.05) runs with "pcnet32" Network driver. Check your VMWare Installation on your Workstation. Reinstall VMWare and install it again.

mine are the same; they simply work

I have SME running virtual on top of SME 7.5 (and earlier versions). I use this for testing and compiling.
I've never had any issues. Never had to do anything unconventional. As with the others I have my ethernet connection bridged and I have the guest assigned a static IP address.
Perhaps if the OP can give more specifics such as how he configured it, what his IP address is, what the scope is of the LAN and DHCP then we can give more guidance.

I have vmware workstation version 6.0.5 build-109488 on a host ms windows 2000 pro version 4
I am having problems and really do not know where to start.
at the vm, i can ping a outside site, and i can access the primary website after install, and have issues with try to go into the server-manager web site.
it tried 7.3,7.4,7.5
i removed and reinstalled vmware workstation 6.0.5.
the new sme version beta 8.05 does not seem to have any issues.
i have tried to install using several setups in vmware.
i have vmware workstation 5.5 and have not tried that version of vmware yet.
i have not installed vmware tools yet bc i have not found how as of yet
i did install a version of 7 on vmware workstation but that was about 3 years ago.
i will try older sme versions previous to 7.3 but do not see the sense of it.
those ppl who have been successful with vmware workstation for windows and sme 7.4 or 7.5, if you can remember your settings and how you done it, i am interested.
my goal is to have it run with vmware player, i am trying to persuade about 100 companies to use the server as a email server.
it is nice that sme beta ver 8 is running on the vmware workstation
probably what is most important is what vmware programs/os you are having success with.
my setup is always a static ip, in bridged mode, and sme server setup in "server only mode"

What issues? What do you see? What do you expect to see? What are you trying and how are you doing that? Please give some more detail as making us guess will most likely not result in the solution you are after.

i was able to load up a sme server ver 7.1 vmware vm i created some years ago and it ran correctly, except for known time issues of the vm lossing time.
every thing seem good to go, so i did a yum update.
the vm loads up, but cannot do a reboot, it locks up after there is a message about system logger.
i can ping to an outside destination, but it seems to start pinging in a somewhat slow fashion.
i can ping the sme vm.
sometimes i can use a browser to get to the home web page, "This web site is under construction".
but it i try a https connection to the root, it will hang most of the time, not always and the same with getting to the server-manager login.
very unpredictable of what is happening, getting to first base sometimes, but not getting to second base at all.
i installed vmware workstation 5.5 and had the same results.
still testing but getting aggravated and burnt out, a trait of me getting older i am sure.
the reason for my getting a vm going with is for testing and practice machine and possibly running email servers with vmware player.
i have had problems with usb keyboards and mouse on dedicated systems and not sure if that is my problem still in a vm or not.
i am still testing to get thing working stable but i have going down for the second time.
is anybody creating sme virtual machines with vmware workstation and if so what version of vmware workstation and what kind of setting are you using for a os and devices, this will help me.

I have been running several version of sme (7.0, 7.1, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5 and 8b4) on vmware server.
Vmware server host has been on Xp, win 7 and sme 7.4.
These setups have only been for testing, but I have not had any issues regarding network or booting. Actually no issues!

it is late now, still testing, having some success with after installing wmware tools, but still there seems to be some issues, i may have installed vmware tools incorrectly.
i ran vmware player with the vm sme 7.5 and there seemed to be less issues.
still working with it
i will try another sme 7.5 vm reinstall then immediately install vmware tools after, maybe have some better results
i had less trouble with version 7.1 back in the day, i might even try to update 7.1 to 7.5 again after installing vmware tools.
there has been much more written about vmware today than was written back several years ago.

the problem i am having has something to do with the ethernet drivers i think.
after installing the vmware tools
i have to toggle the ethernet connection on and off on the vmware software interface, in both the workstation version and player version.
an easy way to see if it is working or not, is that if the bridge connection is toggled on and at the console of the sme server, if you cannot get ifconfig to display, then there is a problem.
the problem is also seen when you are accessing the sme server web pages from a browser in https mode.
how i am getting it work is the while trying to access the server-manager with a browser, i quickly disconnect(disable) the ethernet connection and reenable the connection, then the browser will usually load up the webpages, you might have to do this several times to get it going. while testing, i have no idea how long this situation occurs.

here is the problem as descripbed by another member and it looks like a promising fix may have been found
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,45316.msg219893.html#msg219893
and it points to this in the bugzilla
http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5730
hopefully charlie has the fix on this, trying charlie's solution.
