Title: how do I enable backups

I had a SME server 6.5 which crashed (ie HD crashed) and all is gone. I installed a fresh copy of SME server 7.5 to a different machine and am trying to restore from the backup. The smeserver.tgz is on the desktop and when I try to restore, there is no option to restore from desktop. It also says "Workstation backups are disabled". I looked and googled around and found nothing on how to enable workstation backups and how to (enable to) restore from desktop.

Restore from desktop has been removed due to being unreliable.
Copy the file to a USB memory stick or a CD.
When you first boot after installing a new OS, you will be given the opportunity to restore from a file.
This is a one off request, to reset it see

There are also another option listed in that Howto for restoring from the backup file copied to /.
