I believe I understand that it is not possible to upgrade MySQL on SME server from its current version. I have the followiing references here:
http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:FAQ#MySQL_Database
http://wiki.contribs.org/MySQL
But, I am wondering about the possibility of installing a second MySQL server running concurrently on SME. Not only would this allow an upgrade, but it would allow users to set up their own applications for MySQL without the remotest possibility of interrupting SME's own interests in the MySQL database.
Is it possible to install a second MySQL server on SME?

There is a NFR for that: http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2301
From comment http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2301#c3 and the status of the mentioned bug (wont fix) I doubt if this will be possible, now and in the future.
