Title: Changing MAC address
Post by: Trampas on June 26, 2002, 12:25:33 AM
From what I understand my Cable Modem will not work with my e-smith box as that I need to change the MAC address of the ethernet card used for the calbe modem to the same MAC as my previous Linksys box. Does anyone know how to do this, or if this is really needed?

Thanks

Best bet is to call your cable company and give them the new MAC address.  Failing that, 'ifconfig eth1 hw ' should do the trick.

We probably have different cable companies... but my MAC addresses are not linked in any way to the cable company.  The cable modem will give an IP to whatever device I connect to it.  However, I have to power the cable modem off, then switch my devices, then power the cable modem back on.  Otherwise, it won't release the address and re-issue the IP to the new device.

I use Charter Communications in central Illinois (US).
