Title: Specs for a Squid proxy Server
Post by: shawnbishop on August 27, 2010, 11:20:56 AM
Good Day

I want to configure a squid server for a large number of users, how would I determine, or what do you suggest for about 2000 users, with about 20000 connections a day?

Shawn

Nobody??..

I have been reading as well that for Squid with large cache, one should use ReiserFS as the filesystem due to its ability to handle lots of small files?, anybody have experience with this?

I think you can only trial and error from your own testing to see what best suits your requirement.  For example I used to have 5 set for mine based on 20 users but I soon found out that was a problem how ? well I saw these in my own messages log:

Jul 21 14:47:39 xxxx squid[17252]: WARNING: All redirector processes are busy.
Jul 21 14:47:39 xxxx squid[17252]: WARNING: up to 11 pending requests queued

and had complaints of slow page loading, as soon as I up'ed to 20 I haven't seen any of those WARNINGS in my logs for the past month.

I think you should ask elsewhere.. a good start point could be Squid's (http://wiki.squid-cache.org/SquidFaq) site

this is not, IMHO, a SME's issue, as SME stand for SMALL/Medium.. and 2000 users is quite big :-)

Yep

Understand that

Just SME is so easy and nice to install and get going..., but will take to the Squid Forum

Cheers
