Title: Migrating from 7.3 to 8 with USB backup
Post by: ked on August 28, 2010, 12:24:39 PM
Hello all,

I'd like to do a test migration of a clients' 7.3 server to 8 Beta 6, and am intending to move off IDE disks to SATA disks at the same time.

I would like to install 8 on the new SATA disks and then restore a backup from the existing 7.3 installation via a USB backup. Will this work? Is a USB backup cross-version compatible?

Cheers and thanks for an excellent product.

From a clean install (no contribs or custom-templates) you can indeed use the backup made from 7.3 to restore on 8.x. Of course if you encounter a potential bug then please raise a bug and give as much detail as you can including any reproducing method.

Done. All worked perfectly. Thanks again for such a solid platform.

Thread hijack: I am about to do the same, (7.5 -> 8 ) but wonder if affa will do also.
The affa Wiki (http://wiki.contribs.org/Moving_SME_to_new_Hardware#SME_6_Server) does mention something, but I cannot find hard statements that it will do.

Anyone care to comment?
