is apache web server running here by default? how can I stop it? my isp doesn't want it running either.

Mark,
Yes webserver is running by default.
There are several ways of stopping the webserver but the easiest is to download and install the service control rpm. It will put a link on your server manager under configuration called Services. This will allow you to turn off all sorts of services you do not require.

Unless I'm mistaken, that will also prevent you from using the server-manager. It might be best to reconfigure as a private server and gateway.

Dan,
No it only stops httpd-e-smith. httpd-admin is still running and server-manager is available.

huh..pardon me, but what stupied ISP, doesnt let you run a such simple service such as a webserver?? I would have switched ISP direct, or informed them about the right of your privacy, running what ever you want, as long as it doesnt contain illegal activity. Not even then, are they allowed to point on you and tell "you cant run that here".
If this is true..switch ISP.

Their Acceptable Use Policy and/or Terms of Service may prohibit servers -- that's perfectly legal. It sucks, but it's legal.

well, I'm on Rogers Cable in Ontario. They have busted friends of mine for running IIS and Apache. It's in the user agreement. Sucks, but it's their policy.
