Title: Ethernet Failure?
Post by: jimgoode on September 21, 2010, 06:29:46 PM
My 7.5.1 server has locked up twice in the past two days. The disk light was on solid and none of the clients could access the server or get to the Internet. I had to do a hard boot. The /var/log/messages file shows the message "kernel: eth1: link down" as the last message before the "restart" line in both cases. Does this mean I may have an Ethernet card failure that is causing the problem? Is there any way to find more information?

eth1 = RealTek RTL8139
eth0 = Lite-On 82c168 PNIC

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
Jim

The external ethernet eth1 can go down and be brought up without locking up the server (normally). I assume it's connected to a router. Try unplugging the power to the router and rebooting to check that doesn't lock it up. Might be a dodgy network card. Have had them cause a lockup, and since they're cheap, easy to replace.
