G'day.
I'm looking at SME rather than ClearOS, Zentyal etc. because I twice in Google searches came across references to the ability to give users their own private space on the server - which I took to be a disk quota only they could access (hopefully by network mapping) and perhaps even encrypyt.
However now I have SME 7.1 installed I can find no such facility - iBays seem to fall a long way short of this particular need given their essentially shared nature.
Am I missing something?
Thanks

There is a private ibay associated with each user, accessible through Samba, its share name is the same name as the username.

My guess is you made a typo and mean 7.5.1, if not you should upgrade to 7.5.1 as a lot of fixes and security updates have been release in the mean time, see http://wiki.contribs.org/Updating_from_SME_7.1.x_or_earlier

that's not an ibay, that's the user home dir.. and yes, it's accessible only to the user

And there are several options INCLUDED in SME to enable this area, and indeed, the entire server, to be easily backup up.

p-jones,
Since you mentioned QUOTA:
In the server-manager panel there is an option to set the quota for each user.
Have you read this page http://wiki.contribs.org/Main_Page ?

Sorry, p-jones, my reply was meant for KeeWee.
Too early in the morning - not enough coffee yet!

ibays have a lot of configuration possibilities that could limit their access to a user or users or a group of users.
Have you taken the time to read the Manuals ?
Have you also read the FAQ & Contribs & Howto articles ?
There are many contribs & Howtos that give SME server additional functionality above the base install feature set.

Thanks but neither offering meets my needs, and I have perused the manuals. Have I read every word? No but if the ability to do what I want exists within SME it means I have to get under the bonnet and tinker in detail with configurations and settings, and if I'm going to have to do that I might as well just have Samba on an Ubuntu Server.
Having read the manual again there I can see no way of creating an iBay which serves as a private lockup for a particular user which no-one else - not even Admin - can access.

Yes, I have. I can't see anything relevant. What have I missed?

I think the "documentation" link..
anyway, read carefully and twice here (http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:Administration_Manual:Chapter9)
thank you

Fact is , you dont. Try creating a user, even in V7.1 then \\servername\username. This is the users home drive which is unique to the user, accessible only by the user & the administrator.
In terms of locking out anyone else, including the administrator is, a bit of dream. End of the day, the administrator can still assign read and / or write permissions to others or rest a password to gain access. This is true also of Microsoft and Novell. Until such times as the administrator does this, the users home drive (\\servername\username) is only visible to the user. This is available out of the box.
KeeWee, unless there is a bit more to your requirements that you havent told us, I think you are being hasty in just dismissing this.
SME is a very structured, secure and robust compilation. It is also complex and it does take a bit of time to get ones head around it all.

I agree with p-jones.
Your knowledge & understanding of SME appears limited. That is indicated by the way you pose your questions, expecting certain features to provide certain functionality that they do not provide by default design.
Your specification of your requirements is also rather poorly defined.
The suggestions made to you so far are really just that, as you do not fully specify what your requirements are. We can only suggest what may suit your needs, it is up to you to determine that. Please don't expect an exact answer if you give a vague question.
A better understanding of SME will come by reading the manuals, but if you want functionality beyond the base install (as referred to in the manuals), then you do need to read the Contribs & Howto pages, and I'd also suggest the FAQ pages.
It sounds to me like user home folders will serve your needs, along with enabling of quotas.
You will need to provide more info if you feel those default features do not suit your needs.
Perhaps you should read this Howto
http://wiki.contribs.org/Htaccess
Ibays can be tailored to be accessible by users or groups of users but it does need some small amount of tweaking.
