Title: Upgrade 7.4 to 7.5.1
Post by: vaf on October 13, 2010, 02:25:17 PM
Hi there

I know this is probably quite simple, but how do I upgrade from 7.4 to latest stable version (7.5.1)?

Do I need to burn iso and install from boot, or is there a package that I can run that will install upgrade?

I am having a couple of issues, so might as well upgrade to see if problem can has been solved in new release.

I know someone will say something like "read the documentation" or something derogatory, but I have been searching for about an hour and know that it must be easy for more experienced users.

Thanks

Code: [Select]
yum update
signal-event post-upgrade
signal-event reboot

should do the job, but I have a question for you: do you read root/admin's emails? you should be aware that there are many updates for your server.. if you just keep it up to date, you migrate smoothly from a release to the next one..

when did you apply updates last time? :-)

I don't know where you were looking, but it took me 2 minutes to find this
http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:Administration_Manual:Chapter13#Software_Installer_Panel

where it says:
"The Software installer Panel allows you to configure and install updates to SME Server"

So open server manager, select the software installer panel, and then select to upgrade your system.
Make sure you allow time for it to complete.

Alternatively log in to your server console or via Putty ssh connection as the root user, and issue the command
yum upgrade
followed by
signal-event post-upgrade
signal-event reboot

Okay thanks, that's all I needed!

I am updating now - I wasn't aware that it needed to be updated that often. SME is supposedly a "set and forget" system is it not?

as far as admin emails go, where do you get them? I haven't setup my SME server as a mail server, just as a file server. I'll look at the documentation, but I assume that I can enter an email address and all the admin emails get sent there, or do they sit on the server itself?

Thanks

In the admin mail box on the server.

You should be able to have the mail forwarded to a other e-mailaddress which you do check, see: http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:Administration_Manual:Chapter13#E-mail_Delivery

One tip though: Please start reading the documentation (better read it twice) as you seem to ask a lot of questions that you could have easily found. We are more than willing to help you, but expect you to invest some time as well. Thanks in advance.

As I have stated I am running 7.4 and now upgraded to 7.5.1. The link for the email settings is nice, but you'll find that the email settings page has changed for my versions (page in Documentation looks like it is from version 7.0). I am happy to post a pic of the email settings page in current version if you have not upgraded yet :-P

As far as reading the documentation, you all think that you're so much better than us new users. Experienced users find that all so easy and can navigate the documentation easily because they know exactly what they are looking for - this is the opposite for new users. The documentation, as exampled above, is not always up to date and for us beginners it is difficult enough to learn without having both a different manual to the system we are learning and having smart arses telling us we are stupid. The forums should be a safe place for people to share knowledge, not belittle others. I'd rather you not post a reply and I'll wait for someone nicer to answer my question and treat me like an idiot.

please do.. or, better, please create a wiki account and update the contents that are out-of-date.. if you can't do it (some contents are not available to everyone for editing), please raise a bug against sme documentation, thank you

I think you are missing a point.. no one told you are an idot or a stupid.. you've only been told to read the documentation..
I would add that you should also search here and in the wiki, and read the FAQ..

In my experience I can say that 95% of questions are already been answered..

As far as reading the documentation, you all think that you're so much better than us new users.
No, you are assuming that we think that... I can not speak for all others, but I took some care to phrase it as a tip. Why is it that users with less experience in these forums immediately assume that we are trying to put them down? I did provide you a pointer to your solution didn't I?

Experienced users find that all so easy and can navigate the documentation easily because they know exactly what they are looking for - this is the opposite for new users.
That may be the case, but I also know where it is as I have read it a few times, you could have seen it if you read it, apart from that, as Stefano already said, there is the search function. The point that it might not be accurate anymore is a valid point, though.

The documentation, as exampled above, is not always up to date and for us beginners it is difficult enough to learn without having both a different manual to the system we are learning and having smart arses telling us we are stupid.
Please let your frustration not cloud your judgment and poison your reading abilities. You are implying we said you might be stupid, I did not do so and no one else in this thread. Please adjust your perception as putting you down, insulting you or calling names is not mine, nor the intent of other frequent responders in these forums.

The forums should be a safe place for people to share knowledge, not belittle others.
AFAICT they are to a lot of people.

I'd rather you not post a reply and I'll wait for someone nicer to answer my question and treat me like an idiot.
I am a bit offended with your reply. You repeatedly state we are putting you down as dumb and saying we are smart asses, where we did not do this in this thread. Please adjust your tone as that might help you get the answers you are after, which I gave to you as well. A simple thank you would have been enough, after which you could have said that the documentation was not accurate anymore.

I've stewed over this thread for the last week. Why does a simple refer to the documentation elicit some superiority thing, when it really means you haven't done your homework?

I my time in this forum, I have not seen anyone trying to expound a position of superiority, even when they are able. From the countless amount of threads I've read, the responders have always been professional in their responses.

When one insults those who volunteer their help, it only makes me worry that they will be hesitant in the future to offer assistance. Then we all lose!

I know those that provide their help do so in hope of receiving a simple thank you, nothing more. To that end, I'll send out a thank you to Cactus for his hard work. For the others, I hope my post in general is sufficient.

Nothing, my guess is you have installed a contrib that is dragging in some packages to be required in the update set that it can not find in the repositories you enabled. My guess is that it is due to:

--> Processing Dependency: e-smith-lib = 2.0.0-1ox for package: sme7-open-xchange-conf
This looks like you have installed a modified copy of a package that is installed by SME Server by default to have open-xchange. It seems someone is distributing packages in a way that is not intended, which prevents you from updating.

I think you need to remove the offensive package(s) to be able to properly update your system.

Thanks cactus, I'll give it a try and repost then.

Thanks

Ok, I have removed ox and now the upgrade works.

Thanks again
