Title: Any recommendations for appliance-type hardware for SME Server 8?
Post by: Dan York on November 05, 2010, 06:33:04 PM
My SME Server has been humming along fine for years on a relatively ancient PC in my basement providing the Internet gateway for our home. I'd like to replace that really old Dell tower with some kind of new box, preferably something more appliance-like in terms of not having super loud fans and having a small form factor to sit on a shelf.  However, I've completely lost track of the current state of small server systems.

Anyone have recommendations for a nice small server on which to run SME Server?

I don't need it to have a lot of disk space - mostly want it to have two high speed NICs and a good processor.  I'm NOT interest in building my own box (been there, done that many times). I just want to buy a box, insert a CD, go through my config and get rid of that old box ;-)

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan!

There's a post in this forum about a dozen before yours:

"Nice new hardware for SME Server"

Hey, Charlie, great to interact after all these years!

Thanks for pointing me to that post... not sure how I missed it when I was scanning through the forum this morning.  Perhaps I needed more caffeine.  That looks like a good one to check out.  I was looking at the Shuttle series - http://us.shuttle.com/ - but they seem to have crept up in price over the years and do more than I need them to.

Thanks,
Dan
