Hi Ive been trying to establish the correct settings for imap accounts for mobile users so that they can use the server smtp server no matter what their location and isp connection they are using.
This way they do not have to change the smtp or outgoing server on their email client.
Currently i am using port 25 and without authentication- i camn only email clients within the local domain but cant email clients on different domains not hosted by the server.
Can anyone advise whether this is possible? and how to set it up?
Server SME 7.5 Server only mode.

Use port 465 with authentication.

Hi Charlie- yes i tried port 465, that doesnt seem to be working- it does advise me that either the security protocol is not used by the server or the server is rejecting the authentication. Confirmed multiple times that the password is correct and the protocol being used is ssl or ttl?? with or without certificate authentication on the email client- still no go???
Note: I can send emails to other domain users hosted on the server- but not external domains on other servers???
can you advise what else i can check?

For IMAPS (reading the server from the mobiles) you should use port 993. Most mobiles seem to get this right if you say "IMAP" and "SSL".
To send from the mobiles using the server and SSL (which I think it what you asked for, although it may not be what you wanted), you should use 465 as Charlie indicates.

HI Guys (Charlie and Brian) got it all sorted, as charlie mentioned the correct port was 465 and the correct protocol using Thunderbird was SSL/TLS.- those were the main sticking points I think. May have had to play around with the router settings- to open port 993 and 465.
Your input is appreciated. Thanks again.

No, not "SSH", but "SSL" or "TLS".

Again, not SSH.
