Hi Ive got a 7.5 SME box (2.4GHZ, 512MB RAM, 80GB*2, RAID 1) and am experiencing problems downloading the Emails to a SBS 2003 Exchange POP connector.
The server hosts 6 domains for different clients and friends. In total there are about 150 email clients- 90% using pop accounts the other 10% IMAP.
The problem is intermittant but seem to be caused when the email file attachments files are generally over 1MB.
The Server hosts the emails for a particular SBS Client and they have about 15 pop accounts setup on the SBS server for that domain-the server connects to the SME to get its emails- the reason for this is the client has two domains and the SBS is configured to only use one.
The SBS logs show that it is the SME that disconnects the connection and therefore the SBS fails to download the emails. I can generally "flush" the pipes by removing the emails with large attachments. - once emails fail to download it seems to block any other email that is received by the SME box however small it is. This error only occurs for the domain that has the SBS downloading its emails via the exchange pop connector.:-?
Is there any limitations or timeout issues relating to the SME box?- can this be adjusted?
I'm going to upgrade the RAM from 512MB to 2GB- the avg CPU load is generally around 8% with daily backups.- not sure if this may help.
Could there be bandwith issues- We run ADSL with speeds of up: 1MB and Down: 8MB
Thanks for any input. Regards John Auckland NZL.

Very likely to be a problem with the Exchange POP connector.

Yeah, and M$ logs never lie, right?

No, and no.
Can your exchange server be switched from using POP to use IMAP? You'd avoid the POP connecter that way.

Never mind, I read the original post more closely and saw why this wouldn't work.
But one thing that does spring to mind is that the SME server you describe seems short of RAM. Any way to toss 2 GB in there and see if that improves things?

Would it work to have the SME box simply pass the emails (after virus/spam sanitization, of course) to the Exchange box by setting it up in Server Manager? ("Address of internal mail server" in Email settings)

Hi just to advise that the issue has been resolved- issue was with the pop account configuration on the SBS M$ 2003.
Removed problem account in the SBS pop connector and everything was fine...
Thanks all for the input.
