Title: First time SME User requesting help
Post by: merchantscanada on March 01, 2011, 03:35:02 PM
Hi All,

I am very new to Linux and have very basic experience setting up Linux machines. I have an office with only 05 employees that i need to set up a network for. The services we need are:

1. Web
2. Mail
3. FTP
4. File Server
5. MySql
6. Gateway (Not sure, we have six static external) IPs available to us
The hardware we have is:

Dual 3.0GHz Dual Core Xeon Processors
12GB RAM
2 x 146GB Raid 1 configured (Reserved to be used for server installation)
5 x 300GB Raid 5 configured (Must be available for storage)
1 x Dedicated IP with 500MB line

I must be able to use mysql to create database accounts to be used with Wordpress etc. Is it possible to use phpmyadmin GUI interface with SME?

I have choice between Centos and SME.

Any help would be really apprciated.

Regards

Ather

SME Server does not cater for more than one external IP.

Yes, the phpmyadmin "contrib" will have to be installed but you can then use it from a workstation to administer your MySQL databases.  There's a Wordpress contrib as well.

All this can be done on SME7x.
I hope you´re not thinking about to use FTP to external networks... FTP (most of them) use clear text passwords...not a safe option!

More HW than necessary... this is a big machine!

I suggest you to use SME... less is more! :)
If you have any problem you can write here for support, it´s easy quick and very accurated.
If you have NO WISH to manage your server, you´ll find someone else to do (I can do anything from Brasil, except physical things!) and talk to you using Skype  or other SIP/VoIP connection.

Suggestions:
1) Do not be affraid! SME is easy to learn and use ... really!
2) Do 2 (TWO) backups (and verify them)
3) disable all hardware RAID if present on your HW... trust me ... is better to use just software RAID on linux.
4) disconnect 5x 300Gb HDDs to install SME on 2x126Gb only
5) Search on RHEL HCL for your hardware... install will be smoother if everything is listed.
6) ask if you have doubts... with lot´s of details about everything.
Linux people love to help other ones in trouble, IF THEY provided enough information. Say "do not works" do not help anyone!
