Hi team,
I'm in the process of having a virtual SME Server v8b6 on lindode.com. Although I have payed an external party to get this done, I would like to 'donate' back to the contribs.org community.
To be able to have a virtual SME Server on lindode.com, you have to have an account. Please see their plans and rates. The current virtual SME Server will be available for their 512 plan.
I will be able to collect requests for clones and open up a 'clone' window to transfer a default SME install to your account.
If you are interested, please send me a PM.
Although there are costs involved for doing the cloning, I will take the hit, I feel it is important to test this.
Please expect the first cloning batch to be possible in a week or so.
As said in the title, this is NOT an advertisement, not am I involved in any way with linode.com, they are simply providing a service that could be useful to me and maybe you.
Let me know through a PM. Let us know your thoughts in this thread.
Thanks

Hi all,
it seems that Linode only provides eth0 and eth0:x network adapters, where SME Server can only cope with eth0, ethx 'physical' adapters.
Any ideas on how to overcome this issue for the server MUST be in Server/Gateway mode.
TIA

Above makes me think that they have assigned your machine only one network card and are trying to assign a second IP address to it. I doubt that is a good thing when you are trying to run a server-gateway mode as that would bind the internal IP and external IP to the same interface IMHO.
I seriously doubt linode is suitable for hosting SME Servers:
1. You would like to run in server-gateway mode to have the full firewall on and not expose LAN services to the net
2. You will have no access to the LAN side of your SME Server AFAICT, which IMHO defeats the purpose of installing SME Server. IMHO you are better of getting a CentOS machine and run the services required on there in a server configuration if you are interested in a server, draw back is that you need to know how to configure that securely as no server-manager or configuration templates are available.

Thanks for the response Cactus,
re:
1. Indeed, server/gateway mode is the only suitable and secure mode
2. I would not require the LAN side as such (other then DHCP for VPN), but merely the Server/Gateway mode to be able to benefit from all gateway related security. I also want to benefit from the ease of use of SME Server opposed to any other distro.
Thanks,

What would be the effort to make it possible to make SME Server 8b6 work in server/gateway mode with virtual adapters? (eth0 & eth0:x)

Too much effort for it's benefit IMHO.

I get your point, but 'too much' is a bit subjective isn't it. To make that judgement and considerations, I would like to know the efforts.
Since you already gave it some thoughts, are you willing to share your considerations please?

I was wondering...
would it be possible to have SME Server, at installation time or reconfigure, provide the option to select a 'virtual adapter' next to the real drivers found? Currently during setup, it probes for real drivers found only.
This would open up the possibility to select server mode based on the number of NICS, wether real or virtual.
Maybe a bounty would help?
Thanks,

Hi RequestedDeletion,
I have seen this thread and the bug tracker. I was interested in using linode with SME - unless someone has another suggestion for a VPS with SME ?
Are you still working on this ?
B. Rgds
